Two funny clips that you need to watch IMMEDIATELY!
The first clip is from a HBO series created by Ricky Gervais (creator of the U.K. and U.S. versions of "The Office") called "Extras." In this one he is learning from Sir Ian McKellan how to act. The clip is 2:24 in duration. Allow time to watch it twice and laugh heartily for some time afterward.
The second clip is from a "band" called Flight of the Conchords, a New Zealand duo who sing songs in a parodic manner. This song is called "Jenny." (To look further into the hilarity that is Flight of the Conchords, I recommend another one of their songs called "Albi the Racist Dragon").
Again, it is imperative that you watch these videos instantly. Our friendship and your emotional well-being depends on it.

You've Got a Wedding Planner Who's Coming to Dinner to Lose in 10 Days!: 50 Resolutions on Romantic Comedies
(Note: please remember that the other guys in a romantic comedy can include villinous, cheating, current-boyfriend, as well as sarcastic, good-natured best friend, to wise, elderly confidant):
1. I will not live in New York, or I will immediately move away from New York, thus decreasing to a large degree the possibility that I will be in any kind of romantic comedy.
2. I will not secretly be having an affair on the side which will in the end justify my female romantic lead girlfriend getting together with the male romantic lead.
3. I will not be so self-absorbed that I fail to notice that my female romantic lead girlfriend finds my jokes unfunny and/or my life's work uninteresting.
4. I will not abuse my female romantic lead girlfriend physically, verbally or emotionally, making my character absolutely one-dimensional so that I get whatever is coming to me, beginning with my losing my girl to the male romantic lead and potentially ending in my death.
5. I will not under any circumstances suggest crazy hijinks as a means of winning over the female romantic lead.
6. I will not under any circumstances suggest that the male romantic lead lie as a means of winning over the female romantic lead.
7. A no point will I smugly inform my male romantic lead best friend that I am an expert on women
8. If the male and female romantic leads seemingly loathe each other, I will step in and swiftly vacate the city/state/country with the female romantic lead. This will not guarantee that they will not eventually come together, but will greatly decrease the odds of them reconciling into a relationship.
9. I will point out to the female romantic lead that there is really no reason for her to be unlucky in love as she is a successful and beautiful professional who has a great job writing for a magazine/designing fashionable clothes/being cute and quirky in New York.
10. I will not annoyingly and continuously ask my male romantic lead best friend if "she has any friends to set me up with!" Invariably I will be set up with the plump but good natured female best friend (my counterpart) of the female romantic lead. The more I whine and complain, the more likely it is that I will be humorously set up with someone more awkward (a morbidly obese, man obsessed friend, or perhaps a flagrantly gay man or a cross dresser).
11. I will not suggest to my male romantic lead friend that it would be wise and prudent to spend untold amounts of resources to try and seek out that girl that he had a chance encounter with but whose phone number, address, or even name he failed to obtain on the first meeting. I know that these efforts in the real world would likely be for naught.
12. I will not kindly offer the female romantic lead a kindly smile and a kindly twinkly in my kindly eye with advice that sounds anything like "follow your heart . . ."
13. I will sagely offer advice like, "build a lasting relationship over a period of time. Learn what you can about this person. Pay attention to traits that could be signs of irresponsible, abusive or reckless behavior." I will recongize that the heart can be ridiculous and stupid sometimes.
14. If I am a black guy, I will not casually dispense phrases like, "Man, you be trippin'!" or "She was all up in yo' bidness!" just to show the audience that, yes I am black and yes the romantic lead is progressive enough to have black friends.
15. If I am a black guy, I will not offer my (white) male romantic lead best friend any advice that involves or even references "booty" of any kind.
16. I will not agree to any kind of scheme where the romantic male lead will believe that I am married to or dating my romantic female lead best friend.
17. If I did agree to the above mentioned scheme (thus violating resolution 17) I would not engage in hurriedly or angrily whispered conversations underneath dinner tables, in coat closets or behind napkins.
18. If the female romantic lead were about to catch me and my male romantic lead best friend in one of the many deceptive lies and half-truths that he has spun, I will have a plausible lie prepared. This will eliminate my awkward backpedaling such as "Um . . .! Uh . . . ! You see, the thing is . . . Um!" etc.
19. If I ever am coerced into doing a favor for my male romantic lead best friend so that he can woo the female romantic lead, I will not do anything degrading or unbecoming. Also I will not agree to any favor that is not an emergency in nature that involves me being woken in the middle of the night.
20. If I am present at the marriage of male romantic lead and female romantic lead, I will avoid the tossing of the bouquet, thus avoiding accidentally catching the bouquet, or being cornered by the unattractive, man-obsessed friend who did catch the bouquet in a cliched, unhumorous situation.
21. I will pay attention to possible secret, unexpressed admiration of attractive females around me so that, when expressed, I can act on them and keep the romantic female lead from meeting the male romantic lead, who was waiting in the wings to explain over the course of several weeks and many walks around the city at night why he was the right choice after all.
22. I will do my best to remain out of the rain while in the company of my girlfriend, the female romantic lead, as this is a great location for tearful, but happy, "Deep inside, I've always known that . . ." break up scenes.
23. If I am the father of the romantic female lead, I will not sit down with the romantic male lead and explain to her why "_______ is like her mother." That should have no bearing on the situation.
24. If I am the father of the romantic female lead, I will attempt to understand the culture and background of my daughter's romantic male lead love-interest. I will also expect him to respect and try to understand my own culture, even if eccentric. I will not attempt to suppress the cultural background of myself or my family, no matter what the humorous consequences might be.
25. I will not forcibly bring my romantic lead best friend to try speed-dating.
26. I will not allow my romantic lead best friend to become so dangerously intoxicated that they have the opportunity to pass out and/or vomit on anybody, much less the other romantic lead.
27. I will not suggest to my romantic lead best friend that in order to "win over" the other romantic lead, drastic, painful or questionably dangerous grooming techniques should be employed.
28. I will not insist that a traditional poker-night/bowling-night/boys-night/Monday night football with my male romantic lead best friend is so important that he would be justified in breaking off a burgeoning relationship with an attractive female romantic lead.
29. I will not allow my wife of many years to meddle and pry and drive apart the relationship of our romantic lead child.
30. If I do allow my wife to meddle and pry and almost drive apart the relationship of our romantic lead child (and violate number 30), I will not wait until the wedding night, or five minutes before the wedding to dramatically tell my wife to butt out and then tell my daughter "it's all right, sweetie. You marry whoever you want." or something to that effect.
31. I will allow my romantic lead child to marry the person of their choice and not insist that they marry a ". . . nice (Italian, Jewish, Greek etc.) boy/girl!" If I feel strongly about this, I will make kindly, loving suggestions. I will not speak the words, "You are dead to me!" or something equally irrational and melodramatic.
32. If I am slightly fat and clumsy, I will try to work on improving these traits: attempting to maintain a healthy lifestyle, take up a sport or hobby that will help me with my coordination and in general try not to be a bumbling idiot around romantic female lead or romantic female lead's equally quirky best friend.
33. I will avoid saying anything derogatory to or about the female romantic lead while wearing only a T-shirt, tank-top, or muscle shirt and/or while holding a can of liquid, a bottle of liquid, a screwdriver or a greasy rag, as these statements, are only made to assert my male pig-headishness, generally are made only to allow the male romantic lead to gallantly disagree, and make me appear narrow-minded and one-dimensional.
34. I will not loan my car or apartment to my friend so that he can impress his date. If I do provide a loan of some kind, I will make sure that my property is adequately insured so that if romantic hijinks ensue and my property is destroyed, I will be financially compensated.
35. I will not support my romantic male lead's desires or attempts to make a dramatic proclamation of love via some means of mass communication (television, PA system, megaphone in a traffic jam etc.).
36. I will not challenge the male romantic lead to a challenge of some kind to decide "once and for all" who will have the right to date/court/marry the female romantic lead. This applies whether the challenge is to the death, or to some kind of sports match, or some kind of card game.
37. I will not sabotage, in some oily, underhanded fashion, the event that would've been the male romantic lead's "big break," especially if the female romantic lead has been enthusiastically helping the male romantic lead with his crazy, pie-in-the-sky plans.
38. If I do sabotage the big event of the male romantic lead (and violate number 37), I will not causally walk up the to the female romantic lead after my sabotage has resulted in failure and say something to the effect of "Well, I guess we can see who the real loser is NOW!"
39. I will not publicly belittle the goofy, overweight, social misfits that are the best friends of the male romantic lead. Not only will this make me look bad in the eyes of the female romantic lead, but I will undoubtedly get my comeuppance from these same misfits later.
40. I will not jest at the incompatibility of the my male romantic lead best friend's sloppy, carefree, lackadaisical lifestyle and the uptight, schedule-driven, clean-freak lifestyle of the female romantic lead as these differences can be worked out with small and simple compromises.
41. I will not be the friend who exclusively makes jokes about becoming intimate with the female romantic lead each and every time I see the male romantic lead, thus allowing observers to assume that all men are pigs who obsessed with sex, except for the gallant male romantic lead, who likes the female romantic lead for who she is.
42. I will be impressed, surprised, and extremely skeptical if large groups of people spontaneously stop what they are doing at some bustling place of business (subway, airport, city street, traffic etc.) to applaud or to somehow aid the final climactic proclamation of love from the romantic leads.
43. If I suspect that I am involved in a romantic triangle with the female romantic lead and another male, I will seek out honest objective opinions of casual observers around me to determine whether or not I am more handsome, charming or witty than the other man, and thus determine conclusively if I am not the male romantic lead. If I am not, I will end my pursuit of the relationship with finality.
44. If I am a handsome, attractive celebrity-type, and I suspect that a down-home, sweet, young female romantic lead with whom I have causal contact has fallen for me, and I know that her true love is a somewhat ordinary but still terrific childhood friend/male romantic lead, I will instantly bow out of the scene so as not to prolong the male romantic lead's growing jealousy and frustration.
45. I will do my best to avoid either walking in on the female romantic lead in the shower or changing stall or being walked in on in the shower or changing stall by the female romantic lead as this is primarily the domain and task of the male romantic lead.
46. I will not tell my client the male romantic lead, that I as his ______ (lawyer, agent, manager etc.), I need something to happen before a certain time on a certain date or else there will be serious, dire consequences. This is because the resolution of these things happening before the certain time will undoubtedly result in the meeting and wooing of the female romantic lead.
47. If my romantic lead best friend is suffering because they are missing the other romantic lead after a fight they had or after the lies one or both of them told came to light, I will play an appropriately sappy romantic pop song to drive him/her toward a tearful and public reconciliation.
48. If I am the American/British roommate of the male romantic lead, and the female romantic lead is an uptight Brit/American (the opposite of myself), I will be daft and tosh (or wild and crazy) and engage in all sorts of zany, juvenile pranks that she will have to loosen up and live with. Also, my roommate will be forced to grow up.
49. I will restrict any and all sweeping generalizations and comparisons of women, any phrase that might begin with the words, "Women are like ____ (cars, sandwiches, beer, the stock market etc.).
50. If I suspect that I am a guy who is not the romantic lead in a romantic comedy, I will immediately purchase a hockymask and a chainsaw and make sure that it quickly becomes a horror film.
(Author's note: I just finished writing, in one eye-blearingly, early-morning sitting, the post you just read. I was inspired by a list I read from a Facebook group, called "100 Things I'd Do If I Ever Became An Evil Overlord." It's quite hilarious, and as simple math can tell you, it's twice as long. If I could have hammered out 100 romantic comedy resolutions in one night, believe me, I would have. But now the author needs to sleep and dream of every romantic comedy there ever was.)

Girl (looks down at technical diagram of electrical layout of a house) Oh wow. You'd need a boys brain to figure this out! . . . .

Girl: Oh wow! Have you been working out? Because your arm (touches arm) right there, it's so big!
At this moment, I get up and leave in the middle of a fierce coughing spasm that is covering up my laughing.

The Blirnteeth Post of Christmas: Guess Who Can't Count to 12?
Hey. Let's play a fun game! It's a math game! So get out your slide rules, dust of those abacuses (abaci? abacus'?). This game is called Counting Days on a Calendar! So you'll also need to get out your calendars (calendi?). Ready? Here we go!
1) Find December (any December will do!)
2) Now point at something with your index finger (To avoid awkward misunderstandings, be sure to use this finger)
3) Now find December 24th, Christmas Eve. Point at it.

4) Now count with me, beginning on Christmas Eve (24th) and going backwards. Ready? 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12! Alright, we're done!
5) Now, find a flux capacitor, go back in time to about two weeks ago, find me and tell me that if I want to do a 12 days of Christmas thing, and I want the last post to be on December 24th, the night before Christmas, I should start writing those on December 13th.
So, yes. I am officially ahead of myself and an idiot. I do have two more things that I wanted to write about for the last post, but I also wanted to do that tomorrow night. The chances of anyone actually reading it tomorrow night? Slim to none. But I'll try to get it off early. It'll be worth your Christmas while. And to build it up even more, I promise you that it will make you laugh, and cry and it will heal you of that terrible gout you've suffered all these years!

The Eleventh Post of Christmas: One More Mocking Day Before Christmas!
when you should be showering your true love(s) with eleven pipers piping. If it's late Saturday night and you have failed to do this, then it doesn't matter that you have already given them or what you have wrapped under the tree: you have sold them all short. This, in not so many words, is the underlying meaning of the song, “The Twelve Days of Christmas.” It might be more implied, that love=presents, but this is the message nonetheless (everyone sing along!! "Four calling birds, no less, are to-tally required, to make it anywhere with me!").With the help of catchy (if confusing) Christmas songs (“Why would anyone even want ten lords leaping?”), stores and companies churn out dozens of holiday themed commercials every year, ripe with catchy sayings, slogans and, (dare I make a bad Christmas pun?) jingles (ha!) . Also, the word "churn" is appropriate for some of these ads because that's exactly what they do to your stomach upon viewing them. To be fair, only one of the three, most irritating ad slogans (see below) is really Christmas-exclusive: the other two can be heard all year round. These are by far not the only slogan offenders, but they are the ones that kept coming on today before and during the bowl game.
And without further ado, my least favorite ads campaigns of the season/year:
1) Kay Jewelry: "Every kiss begins with Kay!"
A double whammy! First off, this premise makes absolutely no sense! None, whatsoever. Every kiss? Second, there is a tune that goes along with it so it becomes ingrained in your brain, eventually incorporating itself right into your DNA.

There are at least three Christmas themed TV commercials. One has the dad prompting his son to read an adapted version of "The Night Before Christmas," probably called, "The Trip to the Store When Dad Postponed Retirement and Car Payments to Get Out of the Dog House" and then the dad slips something diamondy into mom's hand. Another one involves diamond giving and kissing (always in that order) at a green light in traffic. How romantic!
Every kiss begins with Kay? Really? That's the premise you're sticking with. Every commercial (and this is all year round) has a couple, usually a middle aged, yet attractive, married couple exchanging the jewelry. They invariably kiss after handing over the rocks. Have these people never kissed before this? Do the women think: "Well, you've worked and supported us for fifteen years now. And the diamond wedding ring was pretty good. I guess I can kiss you now. Just don't let word get around that I'm that kind of girl, ok?" A more accurate ad would be, "Buy your wife something from Kay and she might kiss you, but we're not promising anything, so don't get your hopes up."
2) Jared Jewelry Company: "He went to Jared!"
Wow! Two horrendously irritating jewelry ad slogans! Terrific. Again, these ads run all year long. In fact, now that I think about it, I can't think of any particular Christmas themed Jared ad. And yet they are all the same. The ads always involve a mass of people noticing or hearing that someone received some fabulous piece of jewelry, hearing that it was purchased at Jared and then repeating, over and over "He went to Jared!" You can literally hear the forced exclamation mark in their voices. Remember the song "Fish Heads?" Remember that? "Fish heads, fish heads, rolly-polly fish heads . . ." The Jared commercials are like that only more so. Also important the way that the people repeat the catch phrase, and wide-eyed, ridiculous expressions on their faces, shows their particular emotion: "He went to Jared!" (impressed with fine taste in jewelry store). "He went to Jared!" (either indicating disgust with their own, inferior spouse who failed to go to Jared, or inappropriate, almost lustful attraction to someone else's husband/fiancé). "He went to Jared?" (impressed that man is not a paraplegic deaf/mute I suppose).

3) McDonald's Gift Cards: "Get everyone what's on their list"
Not much to say here (except if it wasn't for McDonalds, there would be a jewelery store monopoly on ridiculous and lame Christmas jingles! If you weren't so obese and breathing so heavily, I'd hug you right now Mickey-D's!).

The idea behind these commericals is that you give people McDonalds gift cards and they use them to buy the fatty, arteriole clogging food that they are addicted to.
I'm not altogether sold on the idea of gift cards as it is ("See I put some effort into this! I had to go all the way to the store to get this card! Now you can go back and do the thoughtful shopping that I was too lazy to do!"). And since most cards are straight across exchanges for the value (i.e. there is no discount for buying a gift card, a $50 gift card purchased for $45 or something), I really cannot imagine a situation where it would be any more meaningful to just give someone the cash. If the gift card says, "Hey I know you like CDs, so I got this gift certificate to Media Play!" than cash says, "Hey I know you like buying things and not using your own money!" which I think is a more honest and universal feeling anyway. It also amuses me that the commercials show the gift cards being given to people you only have causal contact with anyway: dry cleaner and paper deliverer (or something). In both of these professions, why would they not prefer a $5-10 tip instead?
And a gift card for McDonald's? Ewww. I'd rather eat the eleven pipers piping.
The Tenth and a Half Post of Christmas: A Clarification and Apology
In a previous post (there have been a bunch lately, haven't there?), I mentioned that a friend of mine had 1) teased me for not liking the song "Christmas Shoes," and 2) attributed my being single to that fact. She was kidding and I knew she was kidding and it was totally cool that she was kidding because my best friends know that they can make fun of me whenever they want. (You did know that you could tease me all you want right? Wrong. I was lying. Don't do make fun of me. It demeans us both. But mostly me. Which is worse).

The Tenth Post of Christmas: A Practical Idea (that lets you be a cheapskate and a procrastinator!)
(Related question: How on earth does a sandwhich and custard shop generate almost 10 gallons of grease? I don't know but it put me off the thought of custard for a while).
I don't see a down side to this plan. Nobody gets any gifts from neighbors in May (or June, or pretty much any time other than Halloween and then you have to go and ask for them), so you know they'll appreciate having only your tasty goodness to savor. You also have one less thing to worry about during the holidays and one less thing to spend money on (not that money is easier to come by later . . . ).Thursday, December 20, 2007
The Ninth Post of Christmas: Raging Nog-aholic
I'm a big fan of egg nog. So much so that when we were freshmen, my roommate dubbed me a "raging nog-aholic." And not a holiday season has gone by since then that it hasn't come up! Huzzah for running gags! What, may you ask is this years' current up to date egg nog consumption amount? Well, I might be off, but my calculations put me at 3 gallons and one quart. Yikes. In the spirit of full disclosure, I had a half gallon of that in a 20 hour period. Specifically the last 20 hour period (Note: it was actually a low-fat variety, with actually about 1/4th of the fat as normal. I looked at the empty carton when I was throwing it away) Believe me, I am not proud of this fact, though I did enjoy every delicious moment of it.

The Sixth Post of Christmas: Hallmarks of the Season
But back to Christmas cards. We've also noticed (our statistics division is pretty busy this time of year! It's how they can afford to send their kids to better schools than yours!), that most Christmas cards are either 1) overly sentimental, usually with some soft Christmas landscape or a house with lights that wish us "The Best This Holiday Season," 2) silly or hokey, sometime tying together cartoon drawings of winter/cold weather animals (penguins or polar bears) or snowmen doing or saying "Holiday Season" things (ice skating, wondering what Kwanza means etc.), or finally 3) showing Santa Claus in an embarrassing or compromising position, usually involving a chimney (no more explanation should be necessary as there are thousands of these cards in existence). Do you, the Yuletidily minded consumer really deserve more of this Holiday drivel, printed on cheap card stock and sold in bulk for a ridiculous mark up? The answer (thanks statistical division!)? A resounding yes!!!

"That's my point!! Nobody ever really stopped to say 'You know what? If a boy came in and did that right after I had just had a baby, I would smile politely and thank him for his thoughtful gift.'"

Gil was nine years old with tousled brown hair with watery blue eyes as bright as a drowning angel. For as long as Gil could remember he had lived within the walls of a poor orphanage. He was just one of ten children supported by what meager contributions the orphan home could
obtain by defrauding off-shore holding companies. There was very little to eat, but at Christmas time there always seemed to be a little more than usual, and the orphanage seemed a little warmer. But more than this, there was the Christmas chinchilla!
Christmas was the only time of year that such a rare treat was provided and it was treasured by each child like no other food: admiring it, feeling it, prizing it and slowly enjoying each juicy section. Truly, it was the light of each orphan's
Christmas and their best gift of the season. There was an orange tree in the back yard of the orphanage, but all of the orphans were sick and tired of them, and mostly threw them at passing cars. How joyful would be the moment when Gil received his chinchilla!
Unknown to him, Gil had somehow managed to track a small amount of mud through the front door, muddying the new carpet, the new carpet that the orphanage decided to buy before shelling out money for decent Christmas gifts. The punishment was swift and unrelenting, not to mention a complete overkill, though it sets a nice tone for this story: Gil would not be allowed his Christmas chinchilla! It was the only gift he would receive from the harsh world he lived in, (besides a crushing sense of worthlessness and a proclivity toward alcoholism), yet after a year of waiting for his Christmas chinchilla, is was to be denied him.
Tearfully, Gil pleaded that he be forgiven and promised never to track mud into the orphanage again, but to no avail as that surely would ruin the touching ending of the story. Gil cried into his pillow all that night and spent Christmas Day feeling empty and alone. He felt that the other children didn't want to be with a boy who had been
punished with such a cruel punishment. Maybe, he reasoned, the gulf between him and his friends existed because they feared he would ask for a little of their chinchillas. Gil leapt to several other overblown conclusions that were no doubt included in this story to make absolutely sure that we were empathizing with the poor orphan bereft of his chinchilla. Gil spent the day upstairs, alone, in the unheated dormitory. Huddled under his only blanket, he wondered why the author kept including details about how miserable Gil's life was: unheated dormitory, little to eat, only one blanket. He wondered if readers would sympathize with an orphan who wasn't suffering as much as an orphan could possibly suffer. Probably they could not.
Bedtime came, and worst of all (if you didn’t count the food poisoning in their dinner the orphans would violently learn about early the next morning), Gil couldn't sleep. As he climbed into bed from the cold, hard floor, a soft hand touched Gil shoulder, startling him momentarily and an object was silently placed in his hands. The giver disappeared into the darkness, leaving Gil with what, he did not immediately know! Looking closely at it in the dim light, he saw that it looked like a chinchilla! Not a regular chinchilla, smooth and shiny, but a special chinchilla, very special. Inside a patched together skin were the segments of nine other chinchillas, making one whole chinchilla for Gil! The nine other children in the orphanage had each donated one segment of their own precious chinchillas to make a whole chinchilla as a gift for Gil.

The First Day of Christmas: "Goodnight, my Deer"
"So you see," Professor Ericson said to his daughter, as he turned off his PowerPoint projector and sat down at the foot of her bed, "It's unreasonable to think that his nose was glowing at all. The text clearly indicates that the nose was "shiny" and that we (the objective observers) "would even SAY it glowed." The physical state of the red nose probably indicated so

In foggy atmospheric conditions, ambient light would be reduced to almost nothing and certainly no more illumination would have been produced from the animal's nose. Putting him, a probably diseased creature at the head of the team pulling the sleigh was a foolhardy error that showed a serious lack of judgement. In actuality, the other reindeer were probably right to shun him."The Professor placed his dry, chapped lips briefly on Kimberly's forehead and walked out of the room, trailing a long, glistening trail of imaginary reindeer blood. The snap of the light switch was the pull-chord of the guillotine that slid down to behead the last last vestiges of childhood fantasy. And his whispered, "Merry Christmas, sweetheart," rustled through the room like needles skittering over concrete.

Recap of things that were never Capped to begin with

Also, if any of the other ghost writers feel like adding photos (and a quick entry to explain them) that would be a cool, easy way to actually participate on this so-called 'group blog' (Tangent: Remember the PBS show "Ghostwriter"? Anyone? Didn't think so.).
Next thing. Over the last few weeks, I've been pretty busy, but several items of interest came up. I probably won't get around to writing them out as much as they deserve, but here, to give you a taste of what might have been, are the names and subjects of some blog entries that, alas, never came to be . . .
"Hold Your End Up,Tiny Dancer!!" - A few Saturdays ago I, Rich D, and a buddy of mine (we'll call him, Rich B.) were hired for a day of moving stage props and scenery for the University Ballet Department. I was told to be ready for some heavy lifting. About 5 other people showed up, one girl ballerina and four guys (ballerinos?). The ballet folks showed up, with one exception, in sandals and shorts even though we'd be clearing out a warehouse full of heavy, dirty and fairly dangerous stage scenery. Result: Rich D and Rich B do most of the work, nearly pull muscles, refrain from yelling at the tiny, tittering ballet dancers, and other hilarity ensues.
"What's in a Name?" - Rich D, listening to one of his favorite Beatles song, "Lady Madonna," decides that "Creeping Like a Nun," would've made an excellent title for this, or any other blog. (Note: he doesn't want you to take that idea. He wants it all for his greedy, little, intellectual-property-grubbing self). Also, just today while talking with "chemically yours", he decided that "For Free or Cookies" (a phrase used to describe what he'd be willing to pay for a physics tutor) would also make an excellent name for a blog and/or a band.
"'The Preachy Letter to the Editor' or 'Pretending to Have My Own Advice Column'" - There was a letter in Daily Universe this week (see here for my documented love of the Daily Universe) that had no purpose other than letting people know that the author of the letter thought that by eating healthy, exercising and avoiding junk food, it was possible to avoid the 'freshman fifteen' (15 lbs. typically gained by new college freshman with unlimited access to cafeteria food and vending machines approximately twelve feet from every entryway on campus). Further reporting would probably show that the author is also a firm believer that breathing helps to extend life and that when released from all means of support, objects suspended in the air tend to fall down (although she's not totally convinced about that second, obvious statement. She'll get back to us). Was it a fairly harmless letter? Yes. Was I going to make fun of it for being pointless and more of a lecture? Heck yeah.
Oh, and I also considered writing more serious observational things about the monks protesting the deplorable government atrocities in Burma and also about the upcoming visit of Sen. Harry Reid to BYU this Tuesday (The Democratic Majority leader deep in Republican territory, also the first visit from a politician since Vice-President Dick Cheney came and was protested during commencement exercises last April. Interesting). Of course, the options were between writing about 1) nothing, 2) funny stuff or 3) serious stuff. So typically serious stuff doesn't hold a candle. I'll keep you posted. Maybe.

"So bad it's terrible" movie: Alexander

Apparently the movie came in under the radar almost three years ago and was considered at the time to be on of the most horrifyingly, vomit-inducingly, terrible big-budget movies ever made. This is suprising considering the usually solid cast consisted of Colin Ferrell ("S.W. A.T.," "Daredevil" and he was in an episode of Scrubs that I like), Anthony Hopkins ("The Mask of Zorro"), Angelina Jolie ("Tomb Raider," "Tomb Raider II,") and from director/writer Oliver Stone ("Platoon," "The Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen Mysteries").
Ok, enough movie-talk junk. I watched this movie (a clean-flixed version, incidentally), a few weeks ago and have rarely ever howled with more enthusiasm at the badness and utter confusion of a movie. A few general notes.
1) Too many speeches! There are at least three speeches, long-winded, quasi-philosophical speeches given before Alexander (young or old) ever says anything.
2) To many Greek diety names used in common vernacular! I did a rough count and came up with at least 13 examples of "For Hera's sake!" "By Dionysis, you'll pay for that!" during the course of the movie.
3) A soundtrack that consists almost entirely of triumphant victory music! This is oddly the most true about the first half-hour of the movie, before anything remotely triumphant has happened besides several speeches (see above). Perhaps the most victorious music is when young blond Alexander horse-whispers a so-called untameable horse. This same scene and triumphant music and horse-whisperage is alluded to during the final showdown battle when, with the same horse, Alexander attacks an elephant in extremely slow slow-motion (which makes less sense than when I just described it).
4) For a movie about the most sucessful conquerer in the world, not enough sucessful battles! There are two, excessively violent battlest, the first of which I had thought Alexander had soundly lost (he rode a horse and yelled a lot and seemed extremely upset about something, but then his men started cheering, so I guess he had won. Perhaps the ancient tradition is that which ever side thinks to cheer first are declared the winners?). And in the second battle, Alexander does lose in a spectacular fashion (see the elephant showdown above), and is wounded, apparently causing a piece of red Saran wrap to be placed over the lense of the camera indicating . . . pain? Loss? Blood?
5) And, (last the best), terrible, terrible dialouge! While writing this, I once again, I got caught up in the small details (other terrible details of the movie) and haven't built up enough focus for the crowning jewel of the awful movie. Here are my favorite moments of dialouge:
From Anthony Hopkin's character the old, confusing narrator: "Things are never simple. And yet, this was."
From a Maceonian commander, to his troops, in 350 B.C. in an Irish accent (yes): "I don't appreciate any belly-achin'!!"
And the greatest of them all, from Alexander to his mother: "You birthed me in a sac of hate!!" (notably, he kisses her, and not in a pleasant "love ya' Mom" way immediately afterward . . . it's gross, pointless and weird).
Verdict: This movie was gross, pointless and weird. If that's your cup of tea, then I'm sure you'll enjoy. If you are a normal human being, however, I'm sure that you won't.

Frequent(ly Dumb) Fliers and Bonus !! (Another Overheard Line)
1st Flier: "Tired of walking to class?! JOIN THE BYU RUNNING CLUB!!"
. . . I certainly can't think of a better way to stop being exhausted by putting one foot in front of the other as I trudge daily to, all the heck over, and then away from campus than to put my feet in front of the other thousands of more times than I currently am.
Is the argument, "Tired of walking to class? Then RUN to class silly!!"? Is it that I can avoid walking by running? Because if it is, then in my mind an equally logical flier could read "Tired of being stabbed?! Then start THROWING YOURSELVES ONTO KNIVES!!!" Because certainly the result would be different . . . somehow. . . .
(Also, I don't want anyone to defend this flier by saying that "you'll be in better shape," or "you'll be healthier" or "maybe you wouldn't mind walking to class so much if you hadn't eaten at least eleven fun sized Baby Ruth bars last night." The flier is dumb. End of discussion.)(And I DID eat eleven fun sized Baby Ruth bars last night. That is true.)
Second Flier: "Is Isaiah easier to understand in Hebrew? Do you want to find out? Take Old Testament 545."
My first thought was to pencil in "No" after the first question and "Not really" after the second question as these were my honest and literal answers to those questions.
My second thought was, what if you sign up for the class and the huge, thick textbook is blank except for writing on the first page that says, "Leading experts characterize the writings of Isaiah as 'confusing' and 'not easy to understand.' They go on to state, 'Even in Hebrew.'" And then hundreds of blank pages. Of course, this textbook would cost approximately two-thousand dollars, and the bookstore will refuse to buy it back at the end of the semester.

As I was walking to the computer lab to write all this down I heard the actual following conversation behind me:
Girl: "Yeah, Utah drivers are horrible!"
Guy: "I know!"
Girl: "And the people who walk are the ones who are too stupid to drive!"

Girl: "Like today, a guy walked out in front of my bus. . . Oh, yeah, I take the bus, 'cause I don't like to drive."

Worst. Roommate. Ever.

My worst roommate ever ironically was the kid who moved into my apartment over the summer after my most interesting roommate moved out. The interesting roommate was a 7' 1'' Brazilian basketball player from Sao Paulo. He was a cool guy. And even though he wasn't the biggest or the fastest on the team, I never made fun of him. And that was only partially due to the fact that he could have palmed my head and torn it into tiny, Brazil-nut sized chunks. I miss that crazy, huge, skinny guy . . .
But the worst roommate was also crazy, and also skinny, but he was teeny. And when I say crazy I mean it in a pretty literal way. I'll call him Estevan. I had the normal complaints about Estevan that I imagine are bubbling up in your brains right now as you comtemplate your worst roommates. Estevan treated the apartment dishes in much the same way that you or I might treat a paper towel from the bathroom, or perhaps that smart but quiet guy who sits behind you in class and helps you with group answer questions: very convenient, even essencial when it's there for you to use. But after you use them, they make absolutely no impression on your life whatsoever. It is as if those dishes, that paper towell and Eric(?)(Jon? Dave?) never existed at all. It stands to reason that Estevan also wouldn't care about clean clothing or bedding (he slept right on the mattress and pulled his one sheet over him . . . ). After not too long (probably, oh, about a day), my other roommate Mike and I began to see that the battle against the rising, unhygenic practices of Estevan were a lost cause. Mike slept at the apartment still, at least occasionally, but he suddenly discovered how much he loved to eat out and be with other people. People who didn't create unholy smells in places where some of us were known to live.
Those are the basics, and probably I could stop there. But what pushes Estevan into the number one spot were the general eccentricities, the quirks, the peculiarities, the overall feeling of "creepy" that Estevan had running out of his ears and pooling around him. Before moving in with Mike and I, Estevan had spent six months living in Japan in a student exchange program. Somehow near the end of his stay in Japan, Estevan, an ultra-skinny Caucasian with protruding features and a heavy eyebrow (singular, although there were occasionally two, but only in the right light), became aware that modeling agencies in Japan were interested in the aforementioned skinny Caucasian-type with said features. (Their feelings on eyebrows and the plurality thereof are as yet unknown). I do not doubt that this is true. However, this became not just a curious factoid about Japanese culture for Estevan but an actual occupational choice. I also am confident that Estevan could do all right living the lifestyle of a model (heck, even I wanted to throw up when I was around him!). Here are some things that were witnessed, probably daily in my apartment:
- Estevan, waking up (10ish?) and eating his breakfast of banana and flavored water.
- Estevan, shirtless, watching hours of Japanese school-kid dramas (?) and/or comedies.
- Estevan, still shirtless, polishes off a yogurt and a bowl of something that is mostly bran using what I suspect are the bowl and spoon that were wedged between the couch cushions. I know they aren't the bowl and spoon I washed that morning, because I have started keeping a set of my own dishes in my desk drawer and letting the kitchen and sink go to whereever it is going. In a handbasket.
- Estevan, doing sets of pushups, still shirtless, with TV still on something produced in the land of the rising sun. Occasionally these are girl-style (on the knees pushups). There's nothing wrong with that (in principle)(but it does help paint the picture, doesn't it?)
- Estevan, on the phone talking about his modeling prospects with persons unknown (Did he actually ever model? Make money modeling?! This is unknown).
- Estevan (need I say shirtless?) checking his muscle definition in the mirror and making more room for the scads of manscaping products that continued to overflow the sink and countertop.
It occurs to me that none of these things on their own really sound all that bad. Added up however, and you get a skinny, fairly smelly, little Gollum of a Caucasian, Japanese model.
